Brian Noyes www.briannoyes.co.uk
Born and brought up in Cardiff, Brian attended the Welsh College of Music and Drama to study classical guitar. After completing his studies there he went on to gain his B.Mus at Cardiff University. Having developed a passion for composition he continued his studies with an M.Mus from Goldsmiths' College, studying under Stanley Glasser. Formative studies were at Dartington Summer School with Peter Maxwell Davies and Aldeburgh School of Advanced Studies with Harrison Birtwistle. Performers of his works have included Latvian Radio Choir, Lontano, Singcircle, Music Projects London, Hilliard Ensemble, Cantemus Chamber Choir Wales, and BBC Philharmonic Orchestra.

He has written in various genres from song cycles to symphonic works (see www.briannoyes.co.uk for list of works). His works show a narrative element in purely musical terms, and an interest in formal balance within a contemporary idiom. He is interested in permanence over the ephemeral, content and lyricism. His overriding stylistic interest is for a narrative to play a strong part in the music, while not being programmatic or overt.

He created and conducted the contemporary music group, Network Chamber Ensemble, in 1984 to perform the works of young Welsh composers. The group performed at various venues and festivals in Wales and England including St David's Hall in Cardiff.

In 2007 he was selected as one of the Shortlisted composers by Sound and Music. As a result of this he had his work 'Points of Decision' chosen for performance by the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by James MacMillan, in February 2008.

He was Head of Music at the United World College of the Atlantic since 1984. He retired from that post in the summer of 2010.
Fe gafodd Briani ei eni a'i fagu yng Nghaerdydd, lle astudiodd y gitar clasurol yng Ngholeg Cerdd a Drama Cymru. Wedi iddo gwblhau ei astudiaethau yna aeth ymlaen i ennill ei B. Mus ym Mhrifysgol Caerdydd. Wedi datblygu hoffter ar gyfer cyfansoddiad, parhaodd ei astudiaethau gyda M. Mus o Goleg Goldsmiths, yn astudio o dan Stanley Glasser. Fe astudiodd yn ffurfiannol yn Ysgol Haf Dartington gyda Peter Maxwell Davies ac Ysgol Astudiaethau Uwch Aldeburgh gyda Harrison Birtwistle. Mae Perfformwyr o'i waith yn cynnwys Côr Radio Latfia, Lontano, Singcircle, Prosiectau Cerdd Llundain, Hilliard Ensemble, Côr Siambr Cantemus Cymru, a Cherddorfa Ffilharmonic y BBC.

Mae wedi ysgrifennu mewn gwahanol genres o gylchoedd gân i waith Symffonig (gweler y rhestr o’r gwaith ar www.briannoyes.co.uk). Mae ei waith yn dangos elfen naratif mewn termau cerddorol yn hollol, a diddordeb mewn cydbwysedd ffurfiol o fewn idiom cyfoes. Mae ganddo ddiddordeb yn y sefydlog dros y byrhoedlog, cynnwys a thelynegiaeth. Mae ei fuddiant hollbwysig ar gyfer arddull naratif yn chwarae rhan cryf yn y gerddoriaeth, er nad yw'n brogrammatic neu’n amlwg.

Fe greodd ym 1984 ac y maen’n arweini y gr_p cerddoriaeth gyfoes, Network Ensemble Siambr, i berfformio gwaith cyfansoddwyr Cymreig ifanc. Mae'r grwp yn perfformio mewn lleoliadau gwahanol a gwyliau yng Nghymru a Lloegr, gan gynnwys Neuadd Dewi Sant yng Nghaerdydd.

Yn 2007 cafodd ei ddewis fel un o gyfansoddwyr y rhestr fer gan Sain a Cherddoriaeth. O ganlyniad i hyn fe ddewiswyd ei waith ‘Pwyntiau Penderfyniad' ar gyfer perfformiad gan Gerddorfa Ffilharmonic y BBC o dan arweiniad James MacMillan, ym mis Chwefror 2008.

Mae wedi bod yn Bennaeth Cerddoriaeth yng Ngholeg Byd Unedig yr Iwerydd ers 1984.
