Jayson Mackie
Born in Cardiff in 1975 and learnt piano, recorder, flute and guitar as a child.

Interest in composition through GCSE and A-level Music study, resulting in the publication of Jazz Suite No1 for flute quartet and Holiday Music for flute and piano (Spartan Press)at age 16.

After A-levels, took time out to compose and study privately with Gareth Davies which led to entry into Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, where he was the first person ever to study undergraduate composition as a first study there in 1997.

Highlights of undergraduate study included scholarship prizes for commendable achievement and was chosen to represent college with Wind Quintet No1 (1997) at ISCM World Music Days Conservatoire Composers' Consortium at Royal Northern College of Music in 1998. Received a joint commission from National Lottery and Arts Council, with fellow composer Roshie Nasehi to write the music for a new Swansea school's community musical, The Big Stink (libretto Vivian French), a cautionary tale demonstrating the importance of recycling, the scourge of pollution through history and looking after our planet. This was given its premiere at Taliesin Arts Centre, Swansea in July 2000. Graduated with overall distinction that summer.

Returned to Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in 2002 to study for MMus in Composition with Lynne Plowman, graduating with distinction in 2004. Chosen to represent the college at Leeds Fuse Festival with Insanity Snapshots written for Connect Ensemble of Bimingham Conservatoire.
