Cylchlythyr/Newsletter 41 Date/Dyddiad: October/Hydref 2011
From the Editor

Dear friends,
I have to confess that my first outing of this spring-like winter season has been to the English National Ballet’s “Strictly Gershwin” at the Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff - sheer joy, music and dance-wise.
Cardiff however is bubbling as ever with new music events as the new season gets under way. One feature is the emergence of a new performing body, Sinfonia Newydd (see below), who have chosen to announce their arrival with some striking and unusual events. Also the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama offers a tremendous choice of performances in various genres, including a new lunch-time series of concerts given by today's students. The building was completely renewed and expanded recently, and now combines a stylish and acoustically excellent concert hall with a striking and dominant exterior. You will find, if you care to look, an excellent description of it in the Independent newspaper of Monday 31st October.
Finally, a request: please review the entry of your name and e-mail address in the Reference section at the end of this Newsletter. If your e-mail address is no longer correct, or you are not there and wish to be represented, please send me the information and it will be put in.
My incipient sense of frustration, at not knowing as much about other parts of Wales as I do about Cardiff, has been put to rest by the considerable amount of information about their musical activities sent to me by our readers - thankyou, everyone! I leave you to go on to read all about it!

Oddiwrth y Golygydd

Annwyl gyfeillion,
Rhaid yw cyfaddau mai i weld “Strictly Gershwin”, gan gwmni'r English National Ballet, yr aethum i a'm gwr yr wythnos ddiwethaf, yng Nghanolfan Mileniwm Cymru – pur fwynhâd mewn cerdd a dawns.

Mae hefyd wrth gwrs dorreth o achlysuron cerddoriaeth newydd yn y brifddinas gyda chychwyn tymor y gaeaf, gan gynnwys ymddangosiad cerddorfa newydd dan yr enw Sinfonia Newydd (gweler isod), sydd wedi creu digwyddiadau eithaf trawiedig i alw'n sylw.

Mae Coleg Brenhinol Cerdd a Drama Cymru hefyd yn cynnig nifer enfawr o ddigwyddiadau cerddorol o bob math, gan gynnwys cyfres newydd o gynherddau canol dydd gan fyfyrwyr presennol y Coleg. Cafodd yr adeilad ei ddiwygio a'i ehangu'n ddiweddar, mae 'nawr yn cynnwys neuadd gyngerdd fawr newydd ag acwstig ardderchog, yn ogystal â newid gwedd y tu allan yn hollol ac yn drawiadol. Cafwyd disgrifiad da iawn ohonno yn ddiwedar ym mhapur newydd yr Independent, dydd Llun Hydref 31.

I ddiweddu – mae gennyf gais: adolygwch os gwelwch yn dda eich henw a'ch cyfeiriad e-bost yn y “Cyfeiriadur” yn niwedd y Cylchlythyr. Os nad ydynt y gywir, neu os nad yw eich henw yno, gyrrwch y wybodaeth i mi, ac fe'i rhof i mewn.

Wedi teimlo'n eithaf rhwystredig na wyddwn i gymaint am ddigwyddiadau yng ngweddill Cymru ag yng Nghaerdydd, diflannodd hynny yn wyneb yr holl bigion ddaeth oddiwrth yr aelodaeth – diolch yn arw iawn, bawb, am yrru gwybodaeth i mewn. A 'nawr, fe'ch gadawaf yn llonydd i'w fwynhau!

Primavera

A chance meeting, at an SPNM music weekend in 1980, between myself and composer Julia Usher led to a thirty-year-long association founding and running our own self-publishing company, Primavera, designing our own covers and distributing our music ourselves.
Primavera was a direct result of the emergence of self-publishing as a new phenomenon in London in the 80’s. Ask Google today for Sibelius, and you will be shown the newest version, which is Sibelius 7, on a page containing icons flagging up the Sibelius, iPad, Scorch and many others. The first “Sibelius 7” however has a resonance for me as the first music software I had on my own Acorn computer. Having begun with a black and white only machine, I ventured to buy a Mackintosh computer and install the old Sibelius 7 on it. (I remember the disbelieving joy when I switched on my first Mac and saw actual colours, blue sky and white clouds, on my own screen!) That particular Sibelius software revolution, enormous at the time, enabled composers to build up a repository of actual printed music within their own studio. From there it was short step to binding (the hardware was not difficult to find) and distribution.
To celebrate this anniversary this year we put on a flute and piano recital of our music in both our home-towns, on October 1st in Cardiff and on October 22nd in Colchester. We owe a great debt of gratitude to both our soloists, Nancy Ruffer, flute and Andrew Wilson-Dickson, piano, for two fine performances of our programme. Enid Luff
Primavera

Trwy i mi a'r cyfansoddwr Julia Usher gyfarfod, trwy hap a damwain, yn un o gyfarfodydd pen wythnos yr SPNM yn ninas Efrog yn 1980, cychwynnodd cysylltiad tri deng mlynedd rhyngom yn rhedeg ein cwmni cyhoeddi cerddorol ein hunain, dan yr enw Primavera. 'Roedd hyn yn cynnwys arlunio ein cloriau ein hunain, a dosbarthu'r copiau drosom ein hunain hefyd.

Canlyniad uniongyrchol oedd Primavera o'r mudiad hunan-gyhoeddi gychwynnodd yn Llundain yn yr 80au. Os ewch ar-lein heddiw at Google a gofyn am Sibelius, cewch weld y fersiwn ddiweddaraf, sef Sibelius 7, ar dudalen yn cynnwys eiconau iPad, Scorch ac eraill. Ond mae'r enw yn dwyn atgofion i mi o'm “Sibelius 7” cyntaf, oedd gennyf ar fy hen gyfrifiadur Acorn ers talwm. Wedi cychwyn ar beiriant du a gwyn yn unig, mentrais wedyn brynu cyfrifiadur Mackintosh, a gosod yr hen Sibelius 7 arno. (Cofiaf fethu credu'r llawenydd wrth droi hwn ymlaen a gweld lliwiau - awyr las a chymylau gwynion – ar fy sgrîn fy hunan!)

Bu'r i'r Sibelius arbennig hwnnw gychwyn chwildro, anferthol yr adeg honno, a alluogodd cyfansoddwyr i argraffu eu sgoriau ei hunain a chreu llyfrgell ohonynt yn eu stiwdio gartref. Cam fechan oedd hi wedyn at gyhoeddi ein cerddoriaeth, rhwymo'r copiau (eithaf hawdd oedd cael gafael ar yr offer), a'u dosbarthu.

Er mwyn dathlu'r penmlwyddiant y flwyddyn hon, penderfynwyd trefnu datganiad o'n cerddoriaeth ar ffliwt a phiano, a'i lwyfannu ym mhob yn o'r ddwy dref ble 'rydym ni'n dwy'n byw, sef Caerdydd a Colchester. Mae diolch enfawr yn ddyledus i'n cerddorion, sef Nancy Ruffer, ffliwt, ac Andrew Wilson-Dickson, piano, am roi dau ddatganiad mor llewyrchus o'n rhaglen. Enid Luff

Sinfonia Newydd – from Toks Dada

The Sinfonia Newydd Autumn/Winter 2011 programme kicks off in Cardiff on Sunday 6th November 2011 with a contemporary chamber music and art double-bill.  At 1pm the Sinfonia Newydd Chamber Series will present a new music and art exhibition across the 6 brand new Contemporary Art Galleries at the National Museum Cardiff where composers have used contemporary art pieces from the full range of Wales' world class contemporary art collection to inspire a programme of brand new chamber music works.

This will be followed shortly by the launch of SN Jazz – Sinfonia Newydd's brand new jazz division aimed at promoting new jazz music through a series of contemporary jazz and classical music fusion events – at 4.30pm on the Glanfa stage at the Wales Millennium Centre.  SN Jazz will launch as part of the Mega Messiah – a huge charity fundraising scratch performance of Handel’s Messiah – with a unique programme of composed and improvised jazz works based around famous melodies from Handel's Messiah.

Toks Dada, Sinfonia Newydd Founder, Artistic & Managing Director and Mega Messiah Orchestral Manager says “The first day in our new concert season programme truly represents the ethos of Sinfonia Newydd and is a huge milestone in our work within Wales’ contemporary music scene.  Not only are we continuing to engage in the collaborative use of contemporary art and music via our chamber event in the new contemporary art galleries at the National Museum Cardiff but also, through the launch of SN Jazz, showcasing the musical diversity that Sinfonia Newydd prides itself upon.”

The concert season will close on Sunday 27th November 2011 with a truly innovative ensemble and chorus concert at 2.30pm in the newly built Dora Stoutzker Hall at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama.  The programme will again feature a series of world première works but this time with a twist!  Expect out of the ordinary use of voices, brace yourself for unique staging of performers and get ready to be taken on a Journey to Szentendre!

Denmark and Britain

Fresh Productions have presented the Exo project, an exploration of the dark, dramatic music from some of Denmark’s leading composers, plus recent Danish-inspired works by Chris Petrie and James Flight, performed by the sensational Azalea and Renard Ensembles. Conducted by Christopher Austin, the Azalea Ensemble performed works ranging from Ruder’s colossal Abysm to Pelle Gundmundsen-Holmgreen’s playfully obscure 'Plateaux for two'. Following the performance of two works written especially for this event by Chris Petrie and James Flight, the event closed with an unexpected twist from Hans Abrahamsen’s seminal work, Marchenbilde' (Fairytale Pictures).
There were two performances, one in London and one in Cardiff:
Kings Place (London), October 24th, 8pm www.kingsplace.co.uk and
Dora Stoutzker Hall (Cardiff), November 1st, 7:30pm www.rwcmd.ac.uk

Hyn oll mewn perfformiadau gan ddau grwp trawiadol, yr Azalea Ensemble, a'r Renard Ensemble, dan arweiniad Christopher Austin.

Yna cafwyd y ddau ddarn gan Chris Petrie a James Flight, a gyfansoddwyd yn arbennig ar gyfer yr achlysur, cyn dod â'r rhaglen i ben gyda gwaith arloesol Hans Abrahamsen, Marchenbilde (Straeon Tylwyth Teg).
