Dear Friends,

Composers of Wales now has a page on the on-line social site - known to a great many of us - Facebook. This has been set up as an act of faith – in the limitless curiosity of the human social animal, and the significance of Facebook as a shop-window (and we need as many of those as we can get!)

To access our page, either put “Composers of Wales in Facebook” into Google, or go to
www.facebook.com/pages/Composers-of-Wales/160359557323297

We are looking forward to a busy spring season. Of two main events, the first is the BBC National Orchestra of Wales Welsh Composers Showcase, now, it seems, a very welcome annual event. It will be held this year on the 17th and 18th of February, in the Hoddinott Hall at the Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff. Selected pieces sent in by Welsh composers will be workshopped throughout the two days, and on the evening of the 18th, there will be a concert whose programme will be made up of a selected few of those scores, under the baton of Jac van Steen.

The second main event will be the Bangor New Music Festival, in Bangor. The Festival's concert programme can be seen on-line at www.bnmf.co.uk/concerts.php. The Festival will be held from March 29th to April 1st and the artist in residence will be the well-known harpist Catrin Finch.

The Festival hosts, as before, the William Mathias Prize, which is administered by Composers of Wales (for details see below).

To mention two events from the programme -

Firstly, The Bobby Sands Memorial Race, with
Eddie Ladd (dancer), Nick Rothwell (sound artist)
Giles Parberry (lighting designer), and
Guto Pryderi Puw (electroacoustic music).

This dance piece follows the life of political prisoner Bobby Sands, who went on hunger strike in order to win back political status for the republican prisoners, in pursuit of the longer-term aim of a united Ireland. On stage, sensors placed either side of a twelve foot treadmill will trigger a combination of electroacoustic music by Guto Pryderi Puw and live electronic sounds by Nick Rothwell.

And secondly, a concert performance of the winning work, and the presentation, of the William Mathias Prize, awarded this year for a piece for solo harp, will be given during Catrin Finch's recital on Friday evening, April 1st.

Plans are taking shape for the late spring and summer, taking us, as an organisation, into new and exciting territory. A workshop day, followed by an evening concert, is planned for late summer, for works for solo guitar and a trio of viola, flute and guitar. And in the late spring we plan to enter the sphere of electro-acoustic music. Watch this space for calls for scores for both events!

A new CD label, under the name Welsh Contemporary, will launch in March – watch for the new website. The first two CD's to appear will contain music by members of Composers of Wales. Needless to say, a third is in the planning, including a call for scores – more details coming soon!

Sonic Alchemists and Others

The clarinet is still the clarinet, is still the clarinet, I said to myself as the architectural music of our brilliant past is once again on the box. Now I love the old masters as much as anyone. They represent an idiomatic genre that cannot be bettered. In fact any composer since c.1918 has quintessentially exhausted and over-played the old tools: mainstream acoustic instruments, notation scoring systems and tonal parameters based on the tempered scale have reached their sell-by date, if not by 1945 then certainly today. It's time to place them in a more realistic creative context.
It's time to change our perception and consign the Old Masters' music to the cultural museum once and for all, there to be enjoyed by all, but freeing us from the enormous mantle that circumvents classical music preventing what I shall call 'a liberation of sound-worlds'. We as a culture must accept that all art has a finite life-time.
Musical syntax will always remain the paramount requirement no matter what new techniques and language, even the sonic alchemists have discovered.
A new approach to creativity is taking place in the other arts, but not so in the greatest of them all: music. Why, as we sit back and make reinforcements of our cultural bias and prejudices in programme after programme about Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Wagner, etc. do we never question the contemporary issues raised here? We never consider other agendas of creativity for sound and its presentation as an infinite option of possibility.
After nearly 400 yeas of exploiting the well-tempered system, it's time to pack up and move on. In a word to composers of the recent past, and now, I say: It's all been thought of and done by better talents than you so why compete by comparison? 'Roll over Beethoven and Co, we love you all just the same' seems a good and healthy maxim. But as I said, a clarinet is a clarinet, is a clarinet.
The writer adds: this piece of mine to Classical Music (letters) was making a point a decade ago which still remains relevant today.

Alcemyddion Sonig ac Eraill

Clarinet yw clarinet, beth bynnag wnewch chi ag e, meddaf i wrthyf fy hunan, wrth wrando unwaith eto, ar y bocs, ar seirniaeth awdurdodol a disglair cerddoriaeth ein gorffennol.
Rwyn hoffi gwaith yr hen feistri cystal a neb. Cynrychiolant idiom arbennig a pherffaith ynddi ei hun. Yn wir, mae unrhyw un fu'n cyfansoddi ers tua 1918 eisoes wedi llwyr ddihysbyddu'r hen gelfi: yr offerynnau acwstig cyfarwydd, systemau nodiant a'r hen fframwaith tonig gwreiddiedig yn y raddfa ardymeredig (the tempered scale) – mae'r rhain i gyd, erbyn hyn, wedi cyrraedd diwedd eu hoes. Mae'n adeg eu hailgloriannu.
Mae'n bryd i ni mewid ein hagwedd tuag at yr Hen Feistri, a'u traddodi i'r amgueddfa ddiwylliannol unwaith am byth, i bawb eu mwynhau, ac i'n rhyddhau ninnau oddiwrth y mwgwd enfawr o “gerddoriaeth glasurol” sydd yn ein hatal rhag “rhyddhau bydoedd o sain”. Mae'n rhaid i ni, fel diwylliant, allu derbyn bod i bob celfyddyd ei ffin naturiol.
Fwy na dim, rhaid wrth gystrawen mewn cerddoriaeth – fel y darganfu yn barod yr alcemegwyr sonig eu hunain. Mae esthetig newydd yn datblygu eisoes yn y celfyddydau eraill, ond nid felly yn y gelf fwyaf oll, sef cerddoriaeth.
Pam, tra byddwn yn dâl i ategu ein rhagfarn gelfyddydol unwaith eto mewn rhaglen ar ôl rhaglen ar y bocs am Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Wagner, ac yn y blaen, na fyddwn ni byth yn pwyso a chloriannu'r cwestiynnau dyrys yma? Na byth yn trafod llwybrau creadigol eraill ym myd sain, na chyflwyno'i holl bosibiliadau?
Wedi ymron bedwar can mlynedd o ddefnyddio'r raddfa ardymeredig, mae'n bryd nawr I symud ymlaen. Wrth gyfansoddwyr y gorffennol agos, a chyfansoddwyr heddiw, fe hoffwn ddweud: “Cafodd hyn oll ei ddarganfod a'i ddefnyddio gan rai mwy abl na chi, felly pam cystadlu?” 'Roll over Beethoven and Co, - 'rydym yn dâl i'ch caru chi' – byddai hyn yn agwedd iach a phriodol.
Ond fel y dywedais - clarinet yw clarinet, beth bynnag wnewch chi ag e,

Mae'r awdur yn ychwanegu: Gyrrais y darn yma ddegawd yn ôl at dudalen lythyrau “Classical Music”, ond mae ei neges llawn mor berthnasol heddiw.

Politics and our Money

A cri de coeur has long been heard in Brussels and here in the UK about the need for a Global Rights Database, to help the process of licensing internationally. In this connection, the International Confederation of Societies of Authors and Composers (CISAC) has been working on a model for the licensing of multi-territorial music service providers.
It proposes in essence that collecting societies license their rights through a Pan-European Portal (PEP) ,which would greatly facilitate things for anyone needing a pan-European or multi-territory licence.

We have learnt that the Government are currently reviewing the costs to business of obtaining permissions from copyright holders (this impacts particularly on composers, as internet companies, for example, at home and internationally, are continually trying to access the use of music for less money). The Prime Minister is actually reported as saying that the law could be relaxed to allow greater use of copyright material without the owner's permission.

Gwleidyddiaeth a'n harian ni

Aeth cri de coeur i fyny ym Mrwsel, ac yma ym Mhrydain, ers tipyn, ynglyn â'r angen am Fâs Data Rhyngwladol, i hyrwyddo'r broses o drwyddedu'n rhyngwladol. Yn y cyswllt hwn, bu CISAC (Cydffederasiwn Rhyngwladol Cymdeithasau Awduron a Chyfansoddwyr) yn gweithio ar fodel trwyddedu darparwyr gwasanaethau cerddorol yn rhyngwladol. Eu cynnig yn y bôn yw i gymdeithasau casglu breindaliadau drwyddedu eu hawliau drwy beth a elwir yn “Pan-European Portal” (PEP) . Byddai hynny'n gwneud pethau'n llawer haws i unrhyw un fo angen trwydded arno ar gyfer Ewrop gyfan neu ar gyfer mwy nag un wlad. Ceir rhagor o wybodaeth yn www.lw.com/upload/pubContent/_pdf/pub2448_1.pdf

Cawson wybod bod y Llywodraeth yn adolygu ar hyn o bryd y costau fyddai'n rhaid i fusnesau eu talu am ganiatâd gan ddalwyr hawliau (byddai hyn yn pwyso'n arbennig ar gyfansoddwyr, gan fod cwmnïau'r rhyngrwyd, er enghraifft, yn y wlad hon a thramor, yn parhau i geisio cael defnyddio cerddoriaeth am ychydig iawn o dâl). Clywsom i'r Prif Weinidog ddweud y gellid llacio'r gyfraith er mwyn caniatáu rhagor o ddefnydd o ddeunydd dan hawlfraint heb ganiatad daliwr yr hawlfraint. John Hardy
For the third time, BBC One flagship arts programme Imagine has featured music by RWCMD's Head of Contemporary Music, John Hardy.
This time the subject is the controversial Chinese artist, Ai Weiwei, perhaps best known internationally as the designer of the Birds Nest Stadium for the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
The Imagine programme on Ai Weiwei was broadcast on BBC One on Tuesday 16th November 2010 at 10:35pm.
It featured music by John Hardy and his former assistant, the RWCMD graduate Hugh Fowler.

Owain Llwyd
In November 2010, Owain was working with a music publishing company who sent his CDs to television and film production companies around the globe. This bore fruit, with television programmes and films selecting his pieces for their productions. He has also received commissions for special pieces from some production companies.

Among other projects, Owain writes
“For the CD Big Screen Atmospheres I had to create the details and variations to music, the basis of which had already been recorded. I went to Bratislava to record with an orchestra and then to Latvia to work with Riga Choir. As well as composing, I had a role as producer on the CD, working with the production team at my publisher, Boosey & Hawkes.”

V1’s X Factor has recently been using Owain’s music from the album Big Screen Scores (ABACO Music Library) as background music.
On Saturday, June 12th, 2010: Acropolis, from Owain’s Big Screen Scores Album (Abaco Music Library) was used on the 1st series box set promo for the TV Series Romanzo Criminale in Italy.

The Wales International Harp Festival featured a Composition Workshop with Owain Llwyd. Owain now specialises in music for the media, and is going to concentrate on programmatic music (stage/film etc). He will also concentrate on both the A level and GCSE requirements. At the workshop the pieces were performed by harpists Angharad Wyn Jones and Eleanor Turner.
Recent new release - Big Screen Promos, ABACO Music Library (Boosey & Hawkes)

The programme also included pieces by Elgar, Vaughan Williams, Howells, and Parry among others.

Eilir Owen-Griffiths
In mid-December, Eilir made an appearance on On S4C's Wedi Saith, talking about his work as a composer, particularly with youth choirs, one of which appeared with him on the programme, and performed one of his pieces.
His choir, Côr Godre’r Garth recently performed his composition Gorffennwyd.
Gorffennwyd is described as a modern cantata inspired by the Bilidal story of Easter. It was written in 2001 when Owen-Griffiths was studying in Pella, Iowa, and performed by his friends and the Central College of Iowa Chamber Choir. The text is a lyrical mis of words by Norman Clos Parry and biblical quotations.
A chamber ordhestra joined the choir for the performacne in the Tabernacl Chapel in Efail Isaf, with soloists Robyn Lyn JIesus), Melissa Henry (Mary), Hedd Owen Griffiths (Pilate), Llew Davies (Judas), Ifan Gwilym-Jones (Peter) and Catrin Heledd (Narrator).

Andrew Lewis
The world premiere of Andrew Lewis's new orchestral work Number Nine Dream was given by the BBC National Orchestra of Wales under its Associate Guest Conductor Grant Llewellyn, as part of the 2010 Bangor New Music Festival. Number Nine Dream is a reflection on the first movement of Mahler's Ninth Symphony, seeing in not just as the stereotypical 'farwell to life', but also as anticipating some of the important musical developments of the later 20th century, especially those of 'spectral music'. According to Schoenberg, a ninth symphony seems like a limit beyond which we may not pass. Number Nine Dream explores what might lie beyond that limit.
The premiere took place at 7.30pm on Friday 16th March, in the Pritchard-Jones Hall, Bangor University, as part of the Bangor New Music Festival 2010.

Leigh Phillips
Leigh continues to work in both film and the live dramatic arts; included in his list of stage projects are several collaborations with acclaimed theatre director Nick Evans (Billy Elliot: The Musical), providing original music for the plays Coriolanus, Our Country's Good and the previously mentioned Jungle Book.
In addition to these projects Leigh is actively involved in the reconstruction of classic film scores - resurrecting lost film-music greats for concert performance. His credits in this field include Omen III: The Final Conflict, Damien: Omen II, Medicine Man, Hollowman (all Jerry Goldsmith), Raise the Titanic (John Barry), Santa Claus the Movie (Henry Mancini) and Exodus (Ernest Gold). Chris Petrie
Chris has a new work, for Piano Quartet and Percussion, in progress.
