Dear Friends,

Composers of Wales is now on two “social interaction sites”. Both of these pages are in their infancy, but they will grow and improve! Please visit them (URL's below) and send me some (polite) feedback. (As an old lady this is my first foray into the world of, well, setting up a social-interaction-site page, and it's been a bit like navigating a whirl-pool.) Pictures and (brief) news of members would be very welcome to put up on the sites - we want to show the world what we do! Send these to me by e-mail please (they cannot currently be put up directly) – at enid.luff@gmail.com (my former address, enid.luff@googlemail.com, will still reach me, the new one is five letters shorter and avoids the “oo” on the keyboard. . .)

We were very happy to have again this year an involvement with the Vale of Glamorgan Festival, who hosted a visit by the world-renowned Estonian Chamber Choir. Members will remember the call for works for the choir which went out before the event. This resulted in three performances during their extremely successful Festival concert at St. Peter's Church, Lampeter, on the 6th September. The three chosen works were Yr Ehedydd, traditional, arranged by Brian Hughes, Nunc Dimittis, by Lee Hicks, and Paradise, by Hilary Tann.

After the excitements of the summer, autumn has been a time for planning, and we look forward to a fruitful time in the spring – watch this space!

Oddiwrth y Golygydd

Annwyl Gyfeillion,

Mae Cyfansoddwyr Cymru 'nawr ar ddwy “wefan gythrebu cymdeithasol”. Mae'r ddwy dudalen yn eu babandod, ond byddant yn tyfu, ac yn gwella! Ewch i'w gweld, os gwelwch yn dda, a gyrrwch ymateb (gweddus!) imi. (Fel dynes hun, wele fi'n mentro am y tro cyntaf i ddyfroedd dyfnion gosod tudalen fel hyn i fyny, profiad eitha tebyg i forio drwy drobwll). Byddwn yn croesawu lluniau a hanesion (byrion) i'w gosod ar y tudalennau – rhaid yw dweud wrth y byd am ein gweithgareddau! Gyrrwch rhain i mi drwy e-bost, os gwelwch yn dda (nid yw'n bosibl ar hyn o bryd eu lan-lwytho'n uniongyrchol) - at enid.luff@gmail.com (mae fy nghyfeiriad blaenorol, sef enid.luff@googlemail.com, yn dal yn ddilys, ond mae'r un newydd bum llythyren yn fyrrach, ac yn arbed yr “oo” ar y llawfwrdd.)

Hyfryd oedd cael cyswllt eto'r flwyddyn hon â Gwyl Bro Morgannwg, gydag ymweliad y côr bydenwog Côr Siambr Estonia. Bydd ein haelodau'n cofio'r alwad am sgoriau aeth allan cyn yr Wyl. Fel canlyniad, cafodd tri darn eu derbyn i'w cynnwys yng nghyngerdd arbennig iawn y côr yn Eglwys Sant Pedr yn Llanbed ar Medi 6, sef Yr Ehedydd, traddodiadol, trefniant Brian Hughes, Nunc Dimittis, gan Lee Hicks, a Paradise, gan Hilary Tann.

Wedi holl hwyl a chynnwrf yr haf, daethom at gyfnod o gynllunio ar gyfer y flwyddyn nesaf, ac edrychwn ymlaen at wanwyn ffrwythlon o weithgareddau - “gwyliwch y gofod hwn”!

From the Committee

Looking forward to the year before us, it's an exciting time - there are several initiatives currently before the Committee. First however, this year many Committee members were due for re-election. Nomination notices were sent out to the membership, by post and e-mail. Sadly however, and regrettably, hardly a single one was returned. We therefore proceeded at our last meeting (the first of the season) to hold an election within the Committee.

We welcomed Mrs Fiona Lawson, who has kindly consented to be our Treasurer, taking over from her husband Ian. We then went on to the election of Officers. The final form of our Committee as it now stands is as follows:
Chairman: Andrew Wilson-Dickson, Treasurer: Fiona Lawson, Editor of the Newsletter: Enid Luff; other members: Ian Lawson, Andrew Powell, Guto Puw and Peter Reynolds. Our Committee Secretary is Audrey Morgan (audrey.morgan59@yahoo.co.uk).

Among the matters reviewed was our Commissioning Booklet, the re-write of which is now in hand.

We touched on other matters such as the Estonian Choir submissions for the Vale of Glamorgan Festival, and putting the organisation up on Facebook and Myspace – these are covered elsewhere in this Newsletter.
So with that, it remains to say – read on!

Oddiwrth y Gweithgor

Wrth edrych ymlaen i'r flwyddyn newydd, mae llawer o brosiectau eithaf cyffrous mewn golwg. Ond yn gyntaf oll, 'roedd rhai aelodau o'r Gweithgor yn tynnu tuag at adeg eu hail-ethol. Felly dyma yrru allan ffurflenni enwebu (drwy e-bost a thrwy'r post) at yr aelodaeth. Yn drist ac yn anffodus, prin iawn oedd yr ymateb. Aethpwyd ymlaen yn ein cyfarfod cyntaf felly i gynnal etholiad o fewn y Gweithgor..

Croesawyd Mrs Fiona Lawson, sydd yn garedig iawn wedi cytuno i weithredu fel Trysorydd i ni, yn dilyn ei gwr, Ian. Wedi hynny etholwyd Swyddogion. Dyma ffurf y gweithgor fel y mae ar hyn o bryd::

Cadeirydd: Andrew Wilson-Dickson, Trysorydd: Fiona Lawson, Golygydd y Cylchlythyr: Enid Luff; aelodau eraill: Ian Lawson, Andrew Powell, Guto Puw a Peter Reynolds. Ysgrifennyddes y Gweithgor yw Audrey Morgan (audrey.morgan59@yahoo.co.uk).

Ymysg materion eraill, daeth ein llyfryn ar gomisiynu dan sylw. Mae'r dasg o ddiwygio hwn mewn llaw.

Trafodwyd hefyd yn fyr materion megis y sgoriau ddaeth dan sylw gan Gôr Siambr Estonia, a rhoi'r Gymdeithas ar Facebook a Myspace – gweler isod.

Felly – darllennwch 'mlaen!

Machynlleth Festival Welsh Composers Concert

Three concerts have stood out for me recently.
The first was on August 23rd, during the Machynlleth Festival, after the long and lovely drive up through mid-Wales, at Y Tabernacl. This beautiful old converted chapel, with its associated Art Gallery, lived up to its reputation, with a good audience, and welcoming wine and coffee in the interval. The evening hosted a Welsh Composers' Concert, and provided an excellent programme of very individual works, played by Clara Biss, violin, Robin Michael, cello, Katie Lockhart, clarinet, and Hugh Watkins, piano.

There were two non-contemporary works, a thoughtful, economical piece, complete in itself, by Fartein Valen, and the sparkling violin and piano sonata by Grace Williams, most gracefully and lyrically played by Clara Biss.
Michael Robinson's Fantasia on Phrases of Fartein Valen was an equally thoughtful, slightly more fulsome, commentary on and exploration of the original.

The concert opened with Andrew Wilson-Dickson's Trio for Clarinet, Cello and Piano, a piece with characteristically energetic, colourful and entertaining opening and closing movements. In contrast, a dream-like central section gave depth to what could otherwise perhaps have risked sacrificing meaning to excitement.

Christopher Painter's The Spring of Vision began with a long melodic statement on the clarinet, which relied on a melodic intervallic structure for its whole meaning. The patterning apparent in the rest of the piece never lost its link with meaningful lyrical melody, a feature too often absent in contemporary music. The inter-related cellular serial structures underlying the form did nothing to detract from this, resulting in a cogent lyrical music of considerable beauty doing full justice to the Vernon Watkins poem, Taliesin and the Spring of Vision, which inspired it.
Huw Watkins' Quartet from Crime Fiction was in complete contrast, consisting from the start of music in a fast, aggressive, staccato idiom. It was also illustrative of the theme of the opera on which it was based, seeming to tell a fast-moving and presumably violent story, with (to quote the composer) “many unexpected and dramatic turns”.

There followed Mark Bowden's Airs no Oceans Keep, for Piano Trio, written in response to a poem by Emily Dickinson. The first line of the poem: “I think that the Root of the Wind is Water” defines exactly the mood and idiom of this very atmospheric and successful piece.

The concert closed with the first performance of a collaborative effort by all the composers, each writing one of Five Variations on a Theme by Brahms. This was accompanied by a quiz given out among the audience, the winner to be announced afterwards over a glass of wine. It is maybe questionable whether this increased the audience's appreciation of the concert? It must be said that this hugely attractive and rewarding venue does not need such gimmicks to please an already involved and responsive audience!
Cyngerdd Cyfansoddwyr Cymreig Gwyl Machynlleth.

Bum mewn tri chyngerdd arbennig yn ddiweddar. 'Roedd y cyntaf ohonynt ar Awst 23, yn ystod Gwyl Gerdd Machynlleth, a hynny wedi'r daith hir, dlos drwy ganolbarth Cymru at ganolfan gelfyddydau Y Tabernacl, hen gapel wedi ei droi yn neuadd gyngerdd sydd â rhywbeth cynnes, cartrefol ynddi. Cyfiawnhaodd yr hen le arbennig hwn ei enw da unwaith eto . 'Roedd yno gynulleidfa dda, a chafwyd croeso gyda gwin a choffi yn ystod yr egwyl, yn yr oriel gelf sy'n rhan o'r un adeilad. Cawsom gyngerdd o waith cyfansoddwyr Cymreig, gyda rhaglen ardderchog o ddarnau llawn cymeriad, dan ddwylo Clara Biss, ffidil, Robin Michael, sielo, Karie Lockhart, clarinet, a Huw Watkins, piano.

Cafwyd dau ddarn nad oeddynt yn gyfoes, sef darn meddylgar gweddol fyr gan Fartein Valen, a'r sonata ddisglair i ffidil a phiano gan Grace Williams, mewn datganiad swynol gan Clara Biss. 'Roedd darn Michael Robinson, Fantasia on Phrases of Fartein Valen, yr un mor feddylgar a dwys a'r gwreiddiol, ac ychydig yn hirach.

Agorwyd y rhaglen gan Driawd i Glarinet, Sielo a Phiano gan Andrew Wilson-Dickson, darn prysur, lliwgar yn llawn egni a hwyl yn y agorawd a'r diweddglo, gyda symudiad tawelach rhyngddynt, oedd yn arbed i'r cwbl fod efallai â mwy o hwyl nag o arwyddocâd.

Cychwynodd The Spring of Vision, gan Christopher Painter, gydag alaw hir, llawn mynegiant, ar y clarinet, oedd a'i holl ystyr cerddorol yn tarddu o'i hadeiladwaith telynegol – peth go anghyffredin ym myd cerddoriaeth gyfoes. Nid oedd rhesyddiaeth cynhenid y strwythyr yn tarfu dim ar ddwysder telynegol y darn tlws hwn, tra'n gwneud cyfiawnder hollol â'r darn o farddoniaeth gan Vernon Watkins, Taliesin and the Spring of Vision, â'i hysbrydolodd.

'Roedd y darn nesaf,Quartet from Crime Fiction gan Huw Watkins, yn wrthgyferbyniad llwyr. Cerddoriaeth gyflym, mewn idiom staccato, ymladdgar oedd hon, yn ddisgrifiad o thema'r opera o'r hon y dyfynwyd hi, yn mynegi, yn ôl y cyfansoddwr, stori gythryblus, gyda llawer tro ar fyd.

Dilynwyd y darn yma gan Airs no Oceans Keep, gan Mark Bowden, i Driawd Piano, a gyfansoddwyd fel ymateb i ddarn o farddoniaeth gan Emily Dickinson. Mae llinnell agoriadol y gân, “I think that the Root of Wind Is Water” yn diffinio'n union ansawdd y darn hudol hwn.T

Fel diweddglo, cafwyd perfformiad cyntaf darn wedi ei gyd-gyfansoddi gan y pum cyfansoddwr, sef Pum Amrywiad ar Thema gan Brahms. Dosbarthwyd cwestiynau cwis yr un pryd i'r gynulleidfa, yr ennillydd i'w gyhoeddi wedi'r cyngerdd gyda gwydriad o win. Mae'n amheus, efallai, oedd hyn yn ychwanegu at ein pleser fel gwrandawyr. Rhaid yw dweud nad oes angen gimmicks fel hyn ar neuadd mor llwyddiannus a chynulleidfa mor fodlon!
Arvo Pärt at the Vale of Glamorgan Festival

Perhaps the most important composer in residence at this year's Vale of Glamorgan Festival was the Estonian Arvo Pärt, who is 75 this year. The festival honoured his work with performances of twelve pieces in total, given by performers from more than one country, and spread over the Festival's seven days at the beginning of September this year. I have loved, and stood in awe of, his music for some years now, and was glad to be able to attend two of these performances.

The first was a rendering in St Augustine's Church, Penarth, by the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir, of Pärt's setting of the Kanon Pokajanen, the Canon of Repentance of the Russian Orthodox Church. The interior of this big old church is at once warm and awe-inspiring, owing to the height of the roof and the colour of the naked brick of the interior walls and columns. As the acoustic is excellent everywhere, it was the ideal location for the choir to sing Pärt's setting of the Canon of Repentance. The programme contained a full translation of the old Slavonic text, which consists of nine “odes” followed by a “prayer after the Canon”, but as it was sung in the original language, the only guide (for the listener) to its progress through the text were the changing aspects of the music as it moved forward. However, such was the quality of Pärt's music, monumental and intensely personal at the same time, that I, and I believe most of those present, sat completely absorbed throughout.

The second concert I heard was at the BBC Hoddinott Hall in the Wales Millennium Centre, Cardiff Bay. The programme contained three pieces by Pärt, and a piano concerto by the Cardiff-based American composer Arlene Sierra. Of the Pärt pieces, two were for chorus and orchestra. In Spe is a setting of words from Psalm 137, beginning “By the waters of Babylon we sat down and wept”. The second choral piece, Cecilia, Virgine Romana, was a response to a commission from the Roman Agency for the preparation of the Holy See 2000 Jubilee in Rome. The text is in Italian, and is an account of the martyrdom of Saint Cecilia, which Pärt matches with a powerful dramatic score.

It was good to hear the first performance of the piano concerto by Arlene Sierra (soloist Huw Watkins) which followed. This was in stark contrast to the Pärt, being in an aggressive, percussive idiom which was at its most pronounced in the piano part. Its title, Art of War, announced unequivocally what it was about – this was uncomfortable, challenging music, exploiting the traditional concerto “confrontation” between piano and orchestra.

For the last piece the evening returned to Pärt for a performance of his fourth Symphony, titled “Los Angeles”. With this symphony (which uses only the orchestral strings and percussion) we returned to a music of enormous authority. After hearing the Symphony, I wrote this:
“The massed strings of the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, partnered by growling percussion, trod through this music slowly, with an immense sense of “power in reserve”. It was like walking into a vast cathedral, the sense of space was overpowering and a bit frightening”.
There remained no more to be said, except that my enjoyment was even more enhanced by the presence of Pärt himself to acknowledge the applause at the end.
Arvo Pärt yng Ngwyl Bro Morgannwg

Y “cyfansoddwr gwâdd” pwysicaf efallai yng Ngwyl Bro Morgannwg eleni, yn nechrau mis Medi, oedd Arvo Pärt, o Estonia, sydd yn 75 oed y flwyddyn hon. Anrhydeddwyd ei waith trwy gydol yr Wyl drwy berfformio deuddeg darn ganddo, gan gerddorion o fwy nag un wlad. 'Rwyf wedi rhoi teyrngarwch mawr, yn bersonol, i'w gerddoriaeth ers rhai blynyddoedd, a phleser mawr oedd cael mynychu dau o'r cyngherddau hyn.

Y cyntaf oedd datganiad gan Gôr Siambr Ffilharmonig Estonia yn Eglwys Sant Awgwstin, Penarth, yn cynnwys y Kanon Pokajanen, sef Canon Edifeirwch Eglwys Uniongred Rwsia. Mae tu mewn yr hen eglwys fawr hon â rhyw gynhesrwydd urddasol yn perthyn iddi, oherwydd ei thô uchel a lliw briciau noeth y waliau a'r colofnau. Gan fod yr acwstig hefyd yn ardderchog ymhobman, 'roedd yn lleoliad gwych i'r côr draddodi'r gerddoriaeth hon. Cawsom gyfieithiad llawn yn y rhaglen o'r hen destun Slafonaidd, sef naw Caniad, gyda “gweddi wedi'r Canon” yn dilyn. Gan mai yn yr iaith wreiddiol y canwyd y darn, yr unig ffordd i'r gwrandawyr ddilyn cynnwys y gân oedd dryw fynegiad a naws newidiol y gerddoriaeth. Er hynny, cymaint oedd awdurdod y gerddoriaeth, yn urddasol ac yn agos atoch yr un pryd, fy mod i, ac fe gredaf y rhelyw o'r gynulleidfa, wedi llwyr ymgolli ynddi.

'Roedd yr ail gyngerdd y cefais ei fynychu yn Neuadd Hoddinott y BBC, yng Nghanolfan Mileniwm Cymru, ym Mae Caerdydd. 'Roedd tri darn gan Pârt yn y rhaglen, gyda chonsierto i'r piano gan y cyfansoddwr Americanaidd Arlene Sierra. 'Roedd dau o ddarnau Pârt yn nwylo Cerddorfa a Chorws y BBC. Y cyntaf o'r rhain oedd in Spe, gosodiad o eiriau o Salm 137, yn dechrau “Wrth afonydd Babilon yno yr eisteddiasom ac wylasom.” Ymatebiad oedd yr ail ddarn, Cecilia, Virgine Romana, i gomisiwn gan yr Asiantaeth oedd yn trefnu Jiwbili 2000 yr Esgobaeth Sanctaidd yn Rhufain. Mae'r testun, yn Eidaleg, yn adrodd hanes merthyriaeth Cecilia, a chafwyd gosodiad pwerus a dramatig gan Pärt.

Da hefyd oedd cael clywed perfformiad cyntaf Consierto i Biano gan Arlene Sierra (yr unawdydd oedd Huw Watkins), gwrthgyferbyniad llwyr i”r Pärt. 'Roedd cymeriad ymladdgar, ergydiol i'r darn yma, yn enwedig felly ar ran y piano. 'Roedd ei deitl, Art of War, yn egluro'i ystyr yn hollol – cerddoriaeth ddadleuol, anghyfforddus, oedd yn mentro i dir y “gwrthdaro” traddodiadol rhwng yr unawdydd a'r gerddorfa.

Ar ddiwedd y rhaglen cafwyd Pedwaredd Symffoni Arvo Pârt, sydd â'r teitl Los Angeles (i linynnau ac offer taro yn unig), a chawsom glywed unwaith eto gerddoriaeth ag iddi awdurdod aruthrol. Wedi gwrando ar y Symffoni, ysgrifennais: “Camodd llinynnau Cerddorfa Genedlaethol Gymteig y BBC, gyda rhan eithaf chwyrn i'r offer taro, yn araf drwy'r gerddoriaeth hon, gydag ymdeimlad o bwer enfawr yn ymatal. Fel petae rhywun yn mynd i mewn i gadeirlan anferth, yn ymwybodol o ofod enfawr oedd yn ymron â pheri ofn.”

Nid oes lawer mwy i'w ddweud, heblaw y bu ein mwynhad yn fwy fyth gan fod Pärt ei hunan yn bresennol i dderbyn y gymeradwyaeth yn y diwedd.

Funding through the PRS for Music Foundation

The terms on which funding for commissions raised through this body is disbursed have been changed, thanks to consultations led substantially by the British Association of Songwriters, Composers and Authors (BASCA). Previously, 50% of the funds to the commissioner were held back until the commissioned work had actually been performed and the project as a whole had been evaluated. BASCA objected strongly to this practice as it unfairly penalised the commissioned composer. After representations were made to Foundation Trustees, the Foundation has now agreed to pay 80% of its funding to the commissioning body at the start of the project so that the composer can be paid by the commissioner without unnecessary delay.

Hitherto Unperformed Gem

Ensemble Cymru have announced that they have brought to performance a hitherto unperformed sextet, for oboe, trumpet, piano, violin, viola and cello, by Grace Williams. The first performance took place on Wednesday September 22nd at St Asaph Cathedral, as part of the North Wales International Music Festival.

Ariannu trwy'r PRS for Music Foundation
Mae amodau ariannu trwy'r corff hwn wedi newid, fel canlyniad trafodaethau dan arweiniad y British Association of Songwriters, Composers and Authors (BASCA). Yn flaenorol, cedwid 50% o'r arian dyledus i'r comisiynwr yn ôl hyd nes bod y darn a gomisiynwyd wedi cal perfformiad, a bod yr holl brosiect wedi ei gloriannu. 'Roedd BASCA yn anfodlon iawn gyda 'r trefniant hwn, gan ei fod yn anheg i'r cyfansoddwr a gomisiynwyd. Wedi gyrru cais at ymddiriedolwyr y corff, cytunodd y PRS for Music Foundation i dalu 80% o'r arian ar ddechrau'r prosiect, er mwyn hyrwyddo talu'r swm gyflawn i'r cyfansoddwr heb oedi..

Perfformiad cyntaf gem o ddarn
